The violence in Anbar has gone down despite the surge, not because of the surge. The inability of American soldiers to protect these tribes from al Qaeda, said to these tribes: "We have to fight al Qaeda ourselves."

None other than Chuck Schumer on the Senate floor.

Even in the face of improvement in Iraq after implementation of the new strategy, to Schumer, the reason there is a turnaround is not because of our efforts, but because of the efforts by the Iraqis (and because our military isn't doing their job!).

So does this mean that Schumer will not criticize Iraq's inability to get their security forces up to par when the report comes out?  Considering that it appears that the Iraqis can actually still do something right (in his mind)?  I doubt it.

Just as it is ludicrous to say that our troops had *zero* impact in Anbar province, a province where our military has worked *hand in hand* with the tribal leaders, it is also ludicrous to say that the Iraqis don't need our military support and they can just do it by themselves.

In the end, this has nothing to do with reality, and everything to do with politics.

It is called empirical evidence.  And when it comes to Iraq, it has no place in political agenda of the Democrats.
