Looks like Brandon Ore got in trouble with the coaches (again) and will miss some playing time.
Virginia Tech running back Branden Ore will be held out of the first quarter of the Orange Bowl against Kansas on Thursday because he arrived late to a practice.
Kenny Lewis Jr. is expected to start in place of Ore, said athletic department spokesman Bryan Johnston on Friday night.
The best is the third one.
12:03 (Blacksburg time) Super classy pre-game ceremony. Perfect timing with the F-15s over the stadium at the conclusion of the National Anthem.
Lee Corso, a few years back, had his rental car struck by lightning near Lane Stadium. Pretty classy wearing that t-shirt.
Also, I like how *both* teams will come out of the tunnels at the same time this year for home games. Such a tribute to all of the colleges and universities that showed support for VT.
12:05 Won the toss. Kick in the endzone. Nice way to start off the game.
12:08 3 and out. Good job.
12:10 Interception. Not good. Too many butterflies?
12:13 3 and out. Defense is looking sharp.
12:17 The offense has got to settle down. Sam Wheeler - 29 yard pass reception. There you go!
12:22 3rd and 9. Out of the timeout. Gain of 10. First down. Good job Hokies!
12:25 Running game and play action pass is starting to click. Another 1st down.
12:26 Play action pass. 1st and goal. Go Hokies!
12:27 ECU sack. Ugh. 3rd and goal. Incomplete pass. 4th down. Going for the field goal.
12:29 Virginia Tech 3. East Carolina 0.
I think the team is still shaking some cobwebs. But that drive had a lot of potential for a touchdown. Time for the defense to crank it up a notch. Let's get a score on the defensive side of the ball!
12:34 Almost a VT interception. 3 and out... again.
12:27 Ore fumble. ECU recovery. Sporadic genius and problems with VT offense. ECU ball at midfield.
12:40 ECU first down. Their first one. And another one. On the VT 14 yard line. Come on Tech! Stop them!
12:42 End of 1st quarter. Virginia Tech 3. East Carolina 0. ECU in the red zone. VT defense has got to buckle down!
12:46 1st down ECU inside the 4 yard line. Umm. This isn't good.
12:48 ECU touchdown. VT 3. ECU 7. We've got a game. Come on Tech! The turnovers are killing us!
12:54 Pass to Eddie Royal. 1st down. There you go.
12:55 ECU sack. 3rd and long for VT.
12:57 VT punt. Good coverage and tackle. Time for the defense to get out of their funk!
13:03 Come on Tech! 3rd and 6 for ECU.
13:04 Incomplete pass. ECU punt. Touchback.
The Virginia Tech offense has got to execute. Too much emotion is wrapped up in this game. Tech never does well when there is a lot of national attention on them. Time to shake that stigma.
13:08 The crowd is incredibly flat. Draining.
13:09 VT punt. ECU ball. With 6 minutes left in the first half. I just don't see any fire in the team. Everything is flat.
13:12 3 and out for the VT defense. ECU punt. Great return to midfield.
13:14 1st down VT.
13:16 Now breakdown. 3rd and long for VT. Ugh. Now 4th down.
13:17 Beamerball. Punt to the 2 yard line. Go Hokies!
13:20 VT interception. Touchdown Hokies! Virginia Tech 10. East Carolina 7.
Getting the spark back! Getting the crowd fired up!
13:27 ECU driving. 46 seconds left in half. Almost to midfield.
13:30 End of the half. VT 10. ECU 7.
Adjustments. Adjustments. Adjustments.
LETS. GO. HOKIES!
13:54 Tech offense 3rd and long. Not a good start after the break.
13:55 1st down. Long pass.
13:56 Another 1st down. Here we go!
13:58 Forced fumble. ECU ball. Come on!
14:00 ECU 1st down.
14:06 Pass defended. ECU 4th down. Nice. ECU punt. Touchback.
14:11 Offense is still flat. 3rd down Hokies. Incomplete pass. 4th down. Ugh...
14:28 The score is unchanged. But Tech is playing with zero emotion, making mistakes, and ECU is playing well.
14:30 End of 3rd quarter. VT 10. ECU 7.
14:35 Touchdown VT. Virginia Tech 17. East Carolina 7.
14:56 VT offense showing some signs of moving the ball. 5 minutes left in the game. But VT just punted.
15:15 Final score: 17-7. When Tech is in the spotlight they usually don't do to well. I am hoping the emotion of the off field is what was making the team look flat.
Next week: Powerhouse LSU. I hope VT gets it together.
GO HOKIES!
College Gameday opening season at Virginia Tech.
ESPN's College GameDay opens its football season in Blacksburg, Va., when East Carolina visits Virginia Tech on Sept. 1.
"Virginia Tech is a special place, and the community is one of the most respectful and passionate we have visited," ESPN vice president Norby Williamson said. "Our coverage will be considerate of the emotional day facing the students, faculty, and people of Blacksburg and the country."
On April 16, 23-year-old student Seung-Hui Cho killed 32 people on campus before committing suicide in a classroom building.
"Every time College GameDay has come to Blacksburg it has been exciting," Virginia Tech football coach Frank Beamer said. "This time, I think there will be a greater togetherness than ever before."
ESPN's Chris Fowler writes a letter to the Hokie Nation.
To the Virginia Tech community:
You have been in our thoughts constantly this past week. We can't imagine the sorrow and pain you feel.
But we do believe this: if any campus we've ever visited has the strength of spirit and unity to somehow move forward and rise above this tragedy...that campus is yours. We've been struck by how much maturity and level-headed restraint you students have shown in the face of an invasive media. Your dignity and humanity have been displayed to the world and, like us, millions have been deeply moved and heartened.
Kirk Herbstreit, Lee Corso and the whole ESPN football crew share with me a deep respect and affection for your university. From our visits over the years, we've learned how special Virginia Tech is. For Gameday's first trip there in 1999, an amazing 13,000 Maroon and Orange faithful wedged into a corner of Lane Stadium to roar that Saturday morning. For our second visit that year, an even larger crowd showed up. We knew folks hadn't come for us, but to show the nation how deep Hokie passion runs. A new Gameday standard was set for enthusiasm and support. Virginia Tech had raised the bar.
We have cherished each visit since, even the time Lee's empty rental car was struck by lightning outside Lane Stadium! All of us look forward to our next chance to share in Hokie pride. To us, Virginia Tech will always represent togetherness, strength, and resilience.
Please know that we will continue to keep you in our thoughts. Go Hokies!
Chris Fowler
And the whole Gameday team
I always like Chris Fowler (and I was at that game in 1999 when GameDay first came to Blacksburg).
Not a big fan of the song, but it is definitely the thought that counts! The images of other colleges/universities showing support has exploded online.
If you missed the video of the Virginia Tech convocation, you can see it here.
And if you can't watch the entire clip, start it from the 49:00 minute mark and watch five minutes of Hokie pride.
I must admit I have been on the phone most of the afternoon talking with friends that went to school with me at Virginia Tech. My friends are really taken aback as am I. I am still in a state of shell shock.
I wear orange and maroon on my heart tonight.
