James Lovelock thinks this is the only idea that can realistically reduce carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere:
There is one way we could save ourselves and that is through the massive burial of charcoal. It would mean farmers turning all their agricultural waste - which contains carbon that the plants have spent the summer sequestering - into non-biodegradable charcoal, and burying it in the soil. Then you can start shifting really hefty quantities of carbon out of the system and pull the CO2 down quite fast.
My only issue with this is the massive global movement that would have to happen to have a large effect.
I have to say that I think the Palm Pre is going to give Apple a run for it's money. Full integration of information from many sources is the next big step. Apple are you listening?
I have been holding back on getting an iPhone mainly because I already have an iPod Touch 2nd Gen (which I love). And now there is the Palm Pre to ponder about...
From what I see on the Pre -- the UI, full synergy integration, and QWERTY keyboard give it an advantage in my mind over an iPhone. Also, the induction charging is pretty damn cool...
(Oh yeah -- some might find the fact you can replace the battery yourself an advantage)
Update: Here is CNET's take.
